Its such a big and great loss to Kenya.Retired president Mwai Kibaki, Cabinet Secretaries and MPs are some of the dignitaries that eulogized the late freedom fighter and veteran politician Mark Mwithaga in Nakuru.
Mwithaga died on Monday of a heart-related complication. He was 79.
Kibaki spoke at the Christ The King Cathedral in Nakuru County during the requiem mass of the former MP.
Mwithaga married in 1970 and Kibaki was his best man.
“I have known Mark and his family for many years. He distinguished himself as a devout Catholic, astute political leader, a committed family man and a reliable friend," Kibaki said.
"I will forever remember his courage and sense of duty to courses that dignify humanity."
He added "Mark will remain one of Kenya’s most notable emblems of triumph over untold adversities in the political arena. He was an icon of perseverance in situations that seemed hopeless and a firm believer making things better than he found them'.
Othaya MP Mary Wambui was among hundreds of mourners who traveled to Nakuru to show their last respect to fallen political legend Mark Mwithaga.
Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri read a condolence message from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"In his death, the country has lost one of its pioneer fighters who championed democracy, exclusivity and equity in a risky era," read the statement.
Also present was Gender CS Sicily Kariuki, Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, his deputy Joseph Ruto, Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria, Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama.
Others are; Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri, former Mps lee Kinyanjui, John Mututho and David Manyara.
Mwithaga was first elected as a Member of Parliament while in prison ans served as Nakuru Town MP between 1966-1979.
He was among the politicians who were in a team that probed the mysterious killing of JM Kariuki in the mid 1970s. He was a committed Catholic, so devoted that he not only appeared in most of the Church’s functions, he was a renown pianist.
Mwithaga was laid to rest at the Nakuru North Cemetery on Friday in accordance to his wishes.
