Beauty queen Esther Wahome who is also a gospel singer has shared a very touching and encouraging story about her son who has a special need of “Autism”.
This past weekend, 1st May,Kuna Dawa’s hitmaker Esther Wahome came forth to talk about her son who has a special need of “Autism” on the Churchill Show.
Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted, repetitive or stereotyped behavior.
According to research Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child’s life. The signs usually develop gradually, but some autistic children first develop more normally and then regress.
Esther Wahome was not an exception in this case as she was later to find out that her new born baby had the condition of Autism.
She says she would at first run to the bed room and cry because of the condition of her son. Although with time she came to understand what causes this condition and accepted. This showed me how parents who find themselves in such a position don’t know how their going to pull themselves out of this. The sad part is that most of them feel like neglecting the child or just give up in life.
she has now partnered with Susan Naipanoi Letuya, the founder and programme coordinator and Anne Gathoni Kung’u, to raise autism awareness through the New Horizon International foundation to be launched on May 28, 2016.
This programme aims at educating parents and families with children who have Autism. Esther says this is close to her because she understands the fear and shame parents tend to feel when they realize their kids have special needs.
Anyway she says that her nine-year old son is overcoming his condition because his family has been supportive by all means.
Esther said on Woman Without Limits hosted by Rev. Kathy Kiuna that the first thing to do is to find out what the problem is rather than assuming the condition.
She believes that we need not discriminate such children as they are like us and need to be treated like normal children only with special attention. She has come to reduce the hyper activity that comes with the type of food consumed which has helped tremendously in improving the condition of the Child.
Although there is no known cure, there have been reported cases of children who recovered. Not many children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood, though some become successful.
